To jmcc: I guess that's what I like about Hanzismatter.com: it doesn't always try to be funny, but sometimes it tries to be enlightening as well. The Mar-31-2005 blog entry was a good example. It wasn't even an attempt at humor, but a heated email exchange involving two opposing viewpoints, and it kinda made you sympathize with both viewpoints. (It is, of course, an insult to tell people what tattoos they should put on their bodies. But it is also disconcerting to see them misuse a foreign language they don't understand, just to look "cool".)
Lord Fahruz, the best book I've read about Westerners making fun of their own ways of using language is Richard Lederer's
Crazy English
, but it only pertains to absurdities of English language usages. E.g. "Why do the Americans drive in a parkway but park in a driveway?" Things like that. Not really related to the issue at hand, but still, it is the most spectacular attempt at poking fun at one's use of a language that I've ever seen. When I first read it, I was still studying English as a second language, and yet I understood the humor in the book, since it was rather universal. Humor can be a much greater force if it can transcend into something universal. And that's something I'm not so sure these Engrish jokes can accomplish. For reasons already stated in earlier posts, Japanese may not find Engrish jokes funny, and Westerners may not find Hanzismatter funny...
