Believe or not, that's my favorite (and saddest) part of the story: where Odysseus, in disguise, walks past an old dog lying on a dungheap, recognizes him, but can't (won't) even reach out to pet or comfort his faithful friend. The moment Argos sees and recognizes his master, he dies.
