32 pixels wide by 32 pixels high.
For personal photos (the one under your name):
60 pixels wide by 60 pixels high
For signature images in posts:
600 pixels wide. There is no height requirement though 150 pixels is recommended.
Why these sizes?
Some people may not be able to use high resolutions on their monitors and large images can cause the page to require horizontal scrolling while reading the posts. Vertical scrolling is always expected and not much to deal with but having to scroll horizontally and vertically for every line of a post can be frustrating for readers.
I love seeing people's icons/photos/signatures. Most people have a talent for making them that far exceeds mine. Still, the main part of a post is the text in the post itself.
As for linked images in posts (hotlinked images posted using the "image" button when posting), there is no restriction.
Posts and/or threads containing personal icon/personal photo/signature images that are too large may possibly be deleted. If it is a new topic that is deleted I'll take the text (relevant link) of the post and post it as a new topic with credit to the original poster.
