Me Im light complected and freckkle up fierce in the sun but if i get enough you cant tell. 30-30s are gamem getters and there aint no finer gun for whitetail. Kin James verisn aint overated its just underead. lobter is shellfish and some religions dont eat it, good enough me so I don't. I use a p38 surplus WWII can opener I got down at the army-navy store. you can carry it in your pocket. The beach is also a great place to see grils so were sunglasses so there boyfriends dont see you straing.

Okay, I'll concede that Mark Twain represents the very apex of American literature. Heh heh heh...(Now be fair, he'd have appreciated that remark).
Personally, I think I would have liked Sam Clemens, I just think he's a bit over-rated as a writer, that's all. And my compatriots unqualified defense of him, though moving, just reinforces that point for me. (I guess we'll leave the Angelfish Club out of things for the nonce...) R1W: I don't think the Beatles were over-rated, but they were certainly over-played. Julia Roberts is probably both. Bob Dylan scrapes by as zeitgeist. Huan: Yes, Starbucks, yes, Greenday, and yes, Kevin Costner (big time). But go to Shanghai before you judge it, okay? Harry: What was that? THE BIBLE ? Were you suggesting that THE BIBLE is over-rated? Interesting. Now personally, I find The Bible a very meaningful document. Of course I look to George Bush to explain most of it to me... EDIT: Oh yeah: Jimmy Stuart, Princess Grace, Doris FACKING Day, Tom Hanks, and Larry King. Also Madonna--the aging stripper, not the Mother of God. |

OMG, WILLIAM WORDSWORTH! Single-handedly destroyed English-language poetry. Thanks a lot, Bill...

My ESTEEMED compatriots?
And didn't I say it was "moving" that Americans like him? That's the trouble with being chronically sarcastic, I guess: no one gets it when you're being sincere. Ah well. Didn't mean to insult anyone, jimmy. Man you guys like Mark Twain. EDIT: No apologies for Wordsworth, though. FOR ME. |

This horse may be dead, but...
coffee already addressed Twain's social precociousness. I also admire him literarily, because he poked a pin into the puffery typical of many of his contemporaries. For good or bad, I am generally quite an Anglophile in my choices of literature, but I am among those who dub Twain one of the first true American voices on the scene, and an adroit one too. And I laud him for it. Don't want to bore folks; I'll shut up now. |

I guess what I meant to say was that the Bible is boring. Cecil B. DeMille and Charlton Heston brought it to me in a much more visually intense and user friendly format. In comparison The Book of Mormon & Dianetics are a more entertaining read in a Philip Jose Farmer kind of way.

Me not Amelican and me likes Mark Twain also the very much. Perhaps it's because I enjoyed MT that I came to appreciate David Sedaris even more. And for that, I thank him.

Yeah, me too, jimmy. I just find him a little over-rated, that's all. Glad you like reading him, though.
Harry: My point was political. I've always said that many Bush Republicans--and mostly Bush himself--are more or less using the voters of the Christian right to get what they want for themselves (lower taxes, looser gun control, perks for business) without any real regard for "good moral values" as defined by the aforementioned fundies. That's politics, I suppose, but it still made me feel good to catch you in the act and give you grief. Figured you could handle it. LF: Sycophants. Oh sorry man, thought this was the Pet Peeves thread... EDIT: Oh yeah: Bob Hope Spencer Tracy The Piltdown Man The Gabore Sisters, especially Eva |
