Well, all ya gotta do is change the name to "Japanese Language Study Forum" and we can exclude the riff-raff, if ya know what I mean, right? No sense lettin' in those undesireables. You know who I mean. I won't mention them in public because I'm cultured, y'know?

I don't know what or who you mean. Would you care to shed some more light on your insinuations?
(a humm.. read that one again and it seemed a bit aggressive. Not my intention. So to set things clear, I just meant: "Dear ko-hi-botto-chan, the who and the what are the mean you say it is my confusing. The xplain LF would desire." (Engrish really helps things get through in a beri furenduri- manner) |

Years ago, I went to Guadaloupe on a vacation planned by an older sibling who forgot to tell me the whole island speaks French.
I had had 3 years of French in high school. I had the weirdest experience on the trip: At the beginning of the visit, I was insecure and scared. By the end of the 2 weeks, I was yakking with everyone I met! |

Welcoming Mr. Name as moderator supremo of this board. It is a big job but you shall fill the role nicely. I am leaving the confines of "Speak in Engrish" to personally meet and greet the new moderators. Here, have a cigar. Shake hands. Nice to meet you!

Heartiest congratulations, IMN, guardian of the Engrish language!(Inter alia) Take your language purity cues from the French, your diplomacy from the Russians, your patience from the Germans, your work ethic from the Albanians and your tolerance and manners from the English(soccer yobs). They may not like you here like that, but they will not trifle with you.

I'm learning Japanese at a slow rate. Incredibly rewarding, but it makes me look back at my HS/college French and say "shee, that crap is EASY!"

How 'bout Thai? They use a Sanskrit alphabet with Chinese-style tonal variations. Example: the words for 'stop & go' are the same, but different tone. I you count to 5 (ha), always use a high tone, or you have said a naughty word.

Languagepal! I like that idea.
I speak bits and pieces of bad German, and sad laborious Spanish. As for Japanese, I can count and introduce myself, and know a little more food vocabulary (I can't find out where the nearest hospital is, but I know the word for peach). These are not useful language skills. My major language problem is I have had Spanish teachers from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain, and the pronunciation and much of the vocabulary is different in each region. These all differ from the Mexican / American street Spanish that everyone in my neighborhood speaks, so unfortunately, I can't hold a conversation with anyone at all. I also tend to throw in a German word into the middle of the sentence when I'm speaking quickly, just to make sure nobody understands what I say. Is this a problem for anyone else, or am I just silly? The beatings will continue until morale improves. |

I share your German problem. I have an acceptable working knowledge of German and am currently studying Spanish. Every now and then a little Deutsch slips out in the middle of some comment. Happened to me all the time when I was in Europe some years back. My brain kept doing this anoying "if it's not English, it must be German" thing.

Thanks Leon; it was a pleasant chat although I couldn't stay long because I get up so early in the morning.
That's only the second time I've used the ezboard chat. In my browser you have to use the mouse to activate the text field, and use the mouse to click send, then click in the text field again in order to write again. It is kind of crap. --
