Today's movie reviews are "John Goldfarb, Please Come Home" (1964) and
"A New Kind of Love" (1963).
In JGPCH, the plot was a mere suggestion. You can't make a racist movie like this any more, ridiculing arabs (maybe Jews), or as sexist, pinching butts and what with the white-slave-trade (harem). My favorite is seeing Shirley MacLaine in a teddy, bikini, harem get-up, you name it. My second favorite thing is that every 3 minutes there is another STAR walking on the set. It never ends. Shirley (singing title song-good choice for Carl), Peter Ustinov, Richard Crenna (Rambo), Jim Backus (Mr Howell/Magoo), Scott Brady (B movies), Fred Clark (Mr Moony), Wilfrid Hyde-White (Battlestar Galactica), Harry Morgan (Dragnet/MASH), Patrick Adiarte (MASH), Richard Deacon (Dick Van Dyke Show), Jerome Cowan, Leon Askin (Dr Frankenstein), David Lewis, Milton Frome, Charles Lane (the Aristocats), Jerry Orbach, Jackie Coogan, Telly Savalas, Angela Douglas, Richard Wilson, Nai Bonet, Sultana, Barbara Bouchet, Ann Morell, Shelby Grant, Irene Tsu (How to Stuff a Wild Bikini) and Stanley Ralph Ross. With John Williams (Star Wars) as composer, writer William Peter Blatty (the Exorcist).
Whew, looking these people up was harder than I expected. If you recognize a name, YEAH! There's no definitive website with a photo and some recognizable credits for ALL of these people.
ANKOL was the basis for Renee Zellweger's "Down With Love." Man doesn't need love, girl regrets never having loved... sparks, yada yada yada. The cool thing is that Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman have been married since January 29, 1958! I get it all mixed up: Woodward lets Ava Gabor dress her up all stylie freaky and that's supposed to be beautiful. The weird thing is I thought she was gorgeous in the first part of the movie with blue shades on, short hair, severe wool coats and masculine ties. She was so cool she was about 30 years ahead of time, and THAT was supposed to be the homely Joanne. Also I get a load of snickers from the rampant 60's sexism. Both are worth seeing if only to remind us of the good old days where "women should stay in the
